2025 Red Sox and MLB Thread

FORT MYERS, Fla. — Richard Fitts will begin the season as the Red Sox' fourth starter.

The 25-year-old righty will pitch the final game of Boston’s four-game opening series at Globe Life Field against the Rangers on Sunday, March 30.

Fitts has allowed four runs in 14 ⅔ innings (2.45 ERA) over five games (three starts) this spring.

The Red Sox reassigned righty Michael Fulmer to minor league camp earlier Friday. He will begin the season at Triple-A Worcester. Only two candidates — righty Quinn Priester and lefty Sean Newcomb — remain for the fifth rotation spot.

Those final two spots opened because Brayan Bello, Lucas Giolito and Kutter Crawford will begin the regular season on the IL.

Bello, who was slowed at the beginning of spring training due to shoulder soreness, is not far from returning. He expects to join the rotation during the first or second week of April. Meanwhile, manager Alex Cora said Giolito (tight left hamstring) also is expected back early in the season.

The Orioles have a left-handed heavy lineup and Newcomb is left-handed. So he might have a slight edge over Priester to pitch the fifth game of the season, which is Baltimore’s home opener March 31.

“We don’t know where they (the Orioles) are right now,” Cora said when asked about using a lefty vs. Baltimore. “I think they got a few guys banged up and guys are coming back. So is it important? Maybe for one day. But we feel comfortable because we know Brayan is trending in the right direction. Gio looks like he’ll be OK. This is not for a month, a month and a half. (It’s for) maybe two, three outings.”

Garrett Crochet will start for the Red Sox on Opening Day. Tanner Houck will start Game 2 and Walker Buehler will start the third game.

William Francis Lee III-Spaceman-played for the Boston Red Sox(1969–1978) and Montreal Expos (1979–1982). On November 7, 2008, Lee was inducted into the Red Sox Hall of Fame as the team's record-holder for most games pitched by a left-hander (321) and the third highest win total by a Red Sox southpaw(94).
On August 23, 2012-at the age of 65-he signed a contract to play with the San Rafael Pacifics of the independent North American League. His often outrageous statements and bizarre actions marked him as an oddity and ensured Lee a lasting reputation-they also earned him the nickname “Spaceman”-a title he never fully embraced-arguing that “his first priority was always Mother Earth.”

I don't acknowledge Any baseball games that are played in fucking March 🥶

The Blue Jays didn’t succeed at first, so they will try again.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. did not accept Toronto’s offer for a contract extension at the start of Toronto’s spring training, which many viewed as the superstar slugger punching his ticket to MLB free agency next year. However, ESPN’s Buster Olney on Thursday reported the Blue Jays made a new offer to Guerrero “in the past 24 hours.”

Olney added “a gap still remains” between the four-time All-Star and the organization that signed him when he was 16 years old back in 2015. It’s also reportedly “unclear” if the two sides have immediate plans to talk more about a potential deal.

Guerrero acknowledged Toronto’s first offer did not come close to meeting his desires. That could have been music to the ears of the Red Sox, who might be interested in the 26-year-old if he reaches the open market. Guerrero reportedly has told friends he would “love” to play in Boston if he leaves Toronto.

Of course, a Guerrero pursuit surely is not top of mind for the Red Sox at this time. Boston embarks on a new season Thursday, and its focus will be on trying to maximize its revamped roster.
