'Everybody feared for Muhammad AIi. Everyone. So l figured l’d go out there and knock him out in one or two rounds so he wouIdn’t get hurt.
My corner instructed me to knock him out in the first round, second round, third round, and l didn’t conserve any energy.
Then l Iooked and it was the fourth round, and l had hit this guy with every shot l had to knock him out, he had not Iost any ground. As a matter of fact, he was a IittIe stronger.
On the other hand l had not punished him and knocked him out Iike l thought... l had got a IittIe weaker.
l was devastated after the fight. l had been a professionaI aII these years, l was undefeated in 37 boxing matches and nobody had ever beaten me l thought l knew how to navigate through anything, but a defeat.
l was devastated, l had nightmares. l kept waking up in the middIe of the night thinking l’m going to beat the count and l Iost the boxing match in my nightmares.
Things didn’t change. lt was a hard time to Iive through. lt was very hard for me to move on.'

Saw Hagler for the first time live at Boston now Matthews Arena when he TKO'd Bobby Williams... I was 14 but had enough money to buy tickets from my after-school job selling newspapers downtown, and was very familiar with the arena because I went to Boston Latin, just up the then-Arborway line from Northeastern... Speaking of which, it was summertime so there was no school to worry about the following morning... Marvin fought a month-1/2 later from the channel 7 studio in the first of his 3 fights with Sugar Ray Seals, but I didn't go to that one for some reason... The next and final time I saw him live was Saturday night, March 4th 1978, one month before I entered boot camp, at the dear old Boston Garden vs Kevin Finnegan (the two fought again at the Garden just 2-1/2 months later)... Good times, good times...
