NFL Players arrest thread

Update: Daniel and Kristen Muir agreed to bring Bryson to meet with investigators at 12 p.m. CT on June 28, Indiana State Police said. The parents “backed out of that arrangement” at 11 a.m., according to police, which they said “signaled an unwillingness to cooperate.”

The original story continues below.

Former Indianapolis Colts player Daniel Muir’s son has been missing for days and is believed to be in danger, Indiana State Police said. Bryson Muir, 14, was last seen leaving a family member’s home in Ohio on June 16 with his mother, according to a June 25 news release from police. Shortly after leaving the family member’s home, Bryson’s mother was pulled over by police, according to the news release. Bryson was not in the car when his mother was pulled over, police said. Two days later, the Cass County Department of Child Services asked police to investigate allegations of domestic battery toward the teen at his home, according to the release. Police and child services said they could not locate the child or reach the parents. A photo shared by police of Bryson showed him with a bruised eye. As of June 27, police said they were able to contact Bryson’s parents at their home, which police said is on property belonging to the Servant Leader’s Foundation in Logansport. The Servant Leader’s Foundation is a nonprofit religious group, according to FOX59. McClatchy News could not find contact information listed for the group. Police said the parents are “beginning to show signs of cooperation” as of June 27, but the teen has not been located. Daniel Muir is a person of interest, Indiana State Police Capt. Ron Galaviz told FOX59. “This investigation is on-going and investigators are continuing to ask those with any information as to the whereabouts of Bryson Muir to call the ISP Post in Peru at 800-382-0689 or to call 911,” police said. Daniel Muir was a defensive tackle who was signed by the Green Bay Packers in 2007. He played there for one year before going on to play for the New York Jets, Indianapolis Colts and Oakland Raiders.

The 14-year-old son of a former Indianapolis Colts player has been found more than two weeks after his reported disappearance, and his parents are among several people now in custody.
Bryson Muir appeared “safe and well,” according to Indiana State Police. He was released into the custody of the Cass County Department of Child Services.
His father, Daniel Muir, faces preliminary charges of domestic battery (Class A misdemeanor) and obstruction of justice (Level 6 felony) while his mother, Kristen Muir, faces a preliminary charge of obstruction of justice (Level 6 felony), Indiana State Police said. Details regarding the other people who were detained Wednesday have not yet been released.

Arrest warrants had been issued for both parents. Police took them to the Cass County Jail. A judge said no bond will be issued for the Muirs on Wednesday afternoon, citing them as flight risks.

This happened as Indiana State Police descended on a compound in Logansport, roughly 80 miles north of Indianapolis.
Three SWAT teams, detectives, K9 units, and a bomb squad were prepared to search multiple buildings at the property owned by the Servant Leader’s Foundation, a nonprofit religious group. The operation began around 6 a.m. Wednesday, ISP said.
“With anything of this nature, we have to be well prepared to go into the unknown,” said Sgt. Steven Glass with ISP. “Ultimately, everything went well and everybody is safe, including Bryson.”
Glass described the operation as “peaceful,” saying police immediately came into contact with the Muirs when they executed the warrants.
Officers from the Logansport Police Department and Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department were also at the scene. The Cass County Sheriff’s Office provided additional resources.
Video showed multiple police cars at the location, along with an armored vehicle from IMPD.
Daniel Muir and his wife, Kristen, were due in court Tuesday but didn’t show, leading ISP to prepare for Wednesday’s operation.

What led up to the Logansport raid

Before Wednesday’s developments, Bryson had last been seen on June 16. His grandmother, Cheryl Wright, said the teen may have been abused by his father, Daniel Muir, a former Indianapolis Colts defensive lineman.
Wright tipped off police about the possible abuse after finding her grandson with a black eye. He was last seen in Cleveland, Ohio, leaving with his mother, Kristen Muir, in a white 2015 Chevrolet Suburban.

Wright previously told Nexstar’s WXIN that she contacted police and took a picture of her grandson’s injuries.
“His face was battered. When I got him, he had a black eye and busted lip,” Wright said. “His whole face was swollen. I can only imagine how many times he had been hit in the face for it to be like that.”
Bryson told her that his father was responsible for the injuries. He didn’t reveal what led up to it.
According to court documents, Daniel Muir allegedly admitted to beating his son in a secretly recorded phone call.
“I whooped his a– like a grown a– man,” Daniel Muir reportedly said in the recording.

Wright believes her grandson had been “brainwashed” by his parents and the religious group to which they belong.
Police quickly found Bryson’s mother and the Suburban, but the 14-year-old wasn’t inside the vehicle. Investigators believe he may have been switched into another vehicle.

Ongoing dispute, Silver Alert

For several days, investigators say they couldn’t contact Bryson’s parents despite going to the family’s home in Logansport multiple times. On June 27, there seemed to be a shift in the case, with Indiana State Police saying the Muirs were “beginning to cooperate.”
Court documents reveal that the Muirs met with investigators at the Cass County DCS office on June 27 but their son wasn’t with them.
‘We don’t know’: Son of former Colts player still missing after 12 days, Silver Alert declared
The Muirs did show police a video of Bryson that showed him standing in an “undisclosed location, possibly in a wooded area.” In the video, Bryson reportedly said, “My father did not punch me in the eye.”
Investigators spoke with both Daniel and Kristen, but said their stories weren’t consistent.
Not long after, any optimism of cooperation quickly dissipated. On July 28, Daniel and Kristen Muir, through their lawyer, agreed to meet with police and bring along their son. An hour before the scheduled meeting, however, ISP said they backed out and refused to hand over Bryson.
That prompted a statewide Silver Alert, which said Bryson was last seen on June 16 and indicated he could be in “extreme danger and may require medical assistance.” That Silver Alert has since been canceled.

More on Logansport property

Signs at the secluded Logansport property make no mention of the Servant Leader’s Foundation, which records show is the registered owner of the property. Multiple signs say, “Welcome to Straitway Indiana Goshen” along with a crest.
Other signs warn against trespassing and state that the location is private property.
An internet search leads to Straitway Ministries, a Tennessee-based religious group that describes itself as “nation of Hebrew Israelites who are commandment keepers; obedient to Yah (God) and our savior, Jesus the Christ.”
The group’s official YouTube page features a video from four years ago that shows a man appearing to be Daniel Muir preaching to a crowd.
Muir played football at Kent State before being signed as an undrafted free agent by the Green Bay Packers in 2007. He went on to spend four seasons with the Colts before playing in three games for the New York Jets and 10 for the then-Oakland Raiders. During his career, Muir signed contracts with the then-St. Louis Rams, the Kansas City Chiefs and the Houston Texans. Muir last played in the NFL in 2013.

Some have described the group as a cult; Bryson’s grandmother feared her grandson was being “brainwashed” and couldn’t bring himself to leave his parents.
“Bryson is so conditioned or brainwashed to their way of living that he wanted to go back,” Wright said earlier this week. “As I tried to get my daughter to leave, he ran out of the house and left with them.”

Response from Muir family, Straitway Truth

“The Muir family, they’ve been improperly targeted and they’re not guilty of any abuse or illegal activity. They’re entitled to their day in court and due process,” Victor Vining, a defense attorney representing Daniel and Kristen Muir, told reporters after the couple appeared before a judge on Wednesday.
During the hearing, a judge denied bond for either Daniel or Kristen Muir, citing them as flight risks. The parents were also each ordered to have no contact with their son. They are scheduled to appear in court again on July 16.
Pastor Charles Dowell, who leads Straitway Truth, posted several videos in the wake of the raid on YouTube. In one of the videos, Dowell said not to trust news reports or police reports about the allegations involving the Muir family.
“You better believe that Straitway is not going to be taking any of this lying down,” Dowell said. “We comin’. You better believe we comin’.”
Sports Illustrated previously detailed Straitway Truth and Pastor Dowell in an extensive report in which many people accuse the religious group of being a cult, amongst other troubling allegations.

The Pittsburgh Steelers got the news today that cornerback Cameron Sutton will be suspended without pay for the first eight games of the regular season. The NFL investigated the March domestic violence incident involving Sutton and determined he violated the league’s personal conduct policy.

Pittsburgh signed Sutton less than a month ago on a league-minimum veteran contract to help bolster the secondary. Sutton spent the first six seasons with the Steelers and was the team’s best cornerback in 2022.

Sutton parlayed that big season into a free-agent contract with the Lions but wasn’t a good fit in Detroit. The Lions released Sutton after the reports that a warrant for his arrest had been issued.

It isn’t clear whether the Steelers will keep Sutton on the roster or release him after the news of his suspension.

They are back to square one on who will be the slot cornerback this season. It is hard to imagine the Steelers had any idea this level of suspension was coming or they might not have signed him.

Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Cameron Sutton has been suspended without pay by the NFL for eight games for violating the league’s Personal Conduct Policy, the league announced on Monday.

Sutton turned himself in to Florida authorities on March 31, nearly one month after a warrant was issued for his arrest on charges of domestic battery by strangulation.

The NFL told CNN that it had investigated the incident involving Sutton and determined he violated its policy, resulting in the 29-year-old being suspended for the first eight games of the 2024 regular season.

Sutton will be eligible for reinstatement on October 29 after the Steelers’ game against the New York Giants, per the NFL.

CNN has reached out to Sutton’s representatives for comment.

Prior to Sutton turning himself in, authorities had been searching for him since March 7 when they responded to his home in Lutz, Florida, after a “verbal altercation turned physical,” CNN previously reported.

The female victim was battered and was left with bruises to the head, neck and upper body, according to Hillsborough County Sherriff’s Office spokesperson Phil Martello.

“After weeks of evading law enforcement, this man has finally made the right choice to turn himself in,” said Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister in a statement in March.

“Domestic violence has no place in our community, and no one is above the law here in Hillsborough County. My thoughts are with this woman as she continues to heal from this man’s gruesome actions.”

Sutton was preparing to enter his second season with the Detroit Lions after starting all 17 regular season games in the 2023 season, making 65 combined tackles with one interception. He also played in the Lions’ three playoff contests, recording eight combined tackles.

However, he was released by Detroit following the arrest warrant being issued. He signed a one-year deal with Pittsburgh as a free agent in June.

This marks Sutton’s second stint in the Steel City, having been drafted by the franchise in the third round of the 2017 Draft. He played for Steelers through the 2022 season, before signing with Lions for the 2023 campaign.

He will miss almost half of the upcoming season as a result of the suspension.

CNN’s Jill Martin and Sara Smart contributed to this report.

Details of former Arizona Cardinals star safety Adrian Wilson's arrest on June 1 describe Wilson as unstable after a domestic disturbance at the Wilson family home early that morning.

Wilson, 44, had been the Carolina Panthers' vice president of player personnel until recently, when it was reported by the Charlotte Observer that the former five-time Pro Bowler and Cardinals Ring of Honor inductee was no longer employed by the NFL team. He was in Scottsdale on June 1 when police came to his house and took him into custody on charges of assault with reckless intent to injure, criminal property damage and disorderly conduct-disruptive behavior.

Arizona Cardinals executive Adrian Wilson before the NFL game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at State Farm Stadium on Dec. 25, 2022, in Glendale, Arizona. The Buccaneers defeated the Cardinals 19-16 in overtime.

The official Scottsdale Police Department incident report, obtained Wednesday by The Arizona Republic, said police responded to a call from the Wilson family home after Wilson's daughter called for help, telling a dispatcher that her father "had yelled at her mom, threw multiple objects around, took a gun out of a safe, and drove off after saying he was going to kill himself in the desert."

The Wilson family met police at a precinct, where family members described Wilson's angry behavior. According to report details, he'd put his hands around the neck of his wife and broken things in the room, upset over his wife having left him separation papers for him to sign.

Wilson, who was a scout and also worked in the Cardinals' front office before taking the Carolina job in early 2023, had gone to live in North Carolina while his family stayed behind in Arizona. Wilson's wife said she'd hired a private investigator to look into her husband being unfaithful, and Adrian Wilson "just lost it from there" after he'd seen the separation papers.

Wilson took a handgun out of a safe as the argument became physical, and his wife was able to get herself and her children out of the house.

Wilson threatened suicide to his mother, he admitted in an interview with police. He admitted to breaking objects in the house, and that it was depressing being away from family for 14 months. He also denied becoming physical with his wife, despite her report saying that Wilson had placed his hands around her neck.

At 6:33 a.m. on June 1, Wilson was informed of the charges against him and taken into custody. He complied with officers without incident.

Later that morning, Wilson was released. ESPN reported that he'd posted bail.

Wilson is due for a virtual court appearance on July 16.

Former Raiders defensive end Anthony Smith was convicted on three counts of murder Thursday afternoon, according to multiple reports.

A jury found Smith guilty in the 1999 double murder of brothers Ricky and Kevin Nettles, as well as a 2001 murder of Dennis Henderson. Both incidents took place in Los Angeles. He was facing a fourth murder charge for the 2008 killing of Maurilio Ponce in Antelope Valley, but that case was declared a mistrial.

In the case of Ponce, there was a hung jury in April 2012 after it deadlocked 8-4 in favor of a guilty verdict. Ponce was found on a California highway after being beaten and shot.

The Nettles brothers were kidnapped from a car wash and found fatally shot the next day. One of the store's employees said an armed man who looked like a police detective arrived at the store that day. The employee said he saw Smith with Ricky Nettles in the street as he ushered him into his car. He never saw his boss alive again.

Henderson was also abducted, along with a man named Terry Ware, by several armed men. Ware was released, but Henderson's body was found in the back of a rental car. Officials at the time said he was beaten, stabbed and allegedly tortured and robbed.

Deliberations for the case began Oct. 21. Smith has remained in custody without bail since his arrest in 2011. The Nettles brothers case along with the Henderson case were considered cold cases but were linked to Smith after further review and witness interviews.

Once they were no longer cold cases, they were filed in conjunction with the Ponce case. As previously mentioned, the Ponce case was originally a mistrial, but a retrial was scheduled, which led to Smith's convictions Thursday.

Smith was the No. 11 overall pick out of Arizona in the 1990 NFL Draft. He had 57.5 sacks and 190 tackles in his career before he retired in 1998.

Three things that never go together are Patrick Mahomes Sr., drinking, and driving.
The father of Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is no stranger to mug shots, repeatedly getting in trouble for his driving and drinking. Now, new reports reveal he got busted in June for a similar offense.
Patrick Mahomes Sr.'s latest run-in with the law comes four months after he was arrested and slammed with driving while intoxicated (DWI) charge for the third time.

According to court documents, Mahomes Sr. was caught driving with an invalid license on June 29 around 8:30 pm. The incident coincidentally happened in Tyler, Texas, the same city he was arrested in for the DWI charge.
Mahomes Sr. was ticketed for the offense and given a citation and a warning for disregarding traffic signs. This indicated that officers initially stopped him for a routine violation before discovering the invalid license.
The documents obtained by TMZ noted that the former MLB pitcher would appear before a judge on or before July 31 for a hearing on his case. However, given his frequent run-ins with the law, it remains unclear if Mahomes Sr.'s license has been suspended or revoked.

Four months before his June citation, The Blast reported that Mahomes Sr. got busted for his third DWI charge. In February, the 53-year-old was arrested, with the total charge being a third-degree DWI or more.
"After two DWI convictions, a third DWI offense (habitual DWI) is a Third-Degree Felony. The maximum fine is $10,000.00, and the maximum prison sentence is 10 years in a Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) penitentiary," the charge stated.
"A conviction for a third DWI will result in a minimum prison sentence of two years and a maximum of ten years in prison (not a county jail). Even if you are granted probation, you will have to serve at least ten days in jail as part of a plea agreement. This usually cannot be waived," it continued.

According to police reports, Mahomes Sr. was traveling slower than other vehicles in the vicinity and was stopped for a routine check. Officers allegedly found an open 16-ounce Coors beer with him, pushing them to run Standardized Field Sobriety Tests.
Mahomes Sr. reportedly showed four signs of intoxication during the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus eye test, two symptoms during the One Leg Stand, and five signs during the Walk and Turn test.
"Based on the totality of the circumstances. I believed Patrick was impaired to a perceptible degree while operating a motor vehicle in a public place," the arresting officer explained, citing probable cause.

As stated, Mahomes Sr. had a history of police run-ins and was arrested in 2018 for a second DWI charge, according to jail records. He served a 40-day sentence on weekends from February 2019 to February 2020.
While Mahomes Sr. faced drinking and driving problems, his second son, Jackson Mahomes, made waves for sexual assault allegations. The Blast reported that the latter scored a massive milestone in the abuse case a month before his father's third DWI arrest.
Jackson was facing three counts of aggravated sexual battery and one misdemeanor battery charge. However, a judge dismissed the three felony counts against him in January, leaving him to battle the misdemeanor charge.
These charges were initially filed against him in 2023 by the Johnson County District Attorney's Office after a woman, Aspen Vaughn, accused him of non-consensual misconduct.

After allegedly chasing the waiter away, Jackson grabbed Vaughn and kissed her three times without consent. In her conversation with authorities, the restaurant owner described him as her step-daughter's friend and noted he had once been asked to leave her establishment.
Despite her abuse claims, Vaughn refused to testify in the case, and the three counts of aggravated sexual battery against Jackson were dropped. The misdemeanor charge left was linked to Jackson's alleged attack on the waiter.

Pro Football Hall of Famer Terrell Davis said he is "still in shock over the traumatizing events" on board a flight to California where he said he was placed in handcuffs.

The two-time Super Bowl champion said in an Instagram post that during a United Airlines flight with his wife and three children from Denver to Orange County on Saturday, his son asked for a cup of ice during the beverage service. The flight attendant didn't respond to the request, so Davis said he "calmly reached behind me and lightly tapped his arm." The flight attendant allegedly shouted "don't hit me" and left the beverage cart to go to the front of the plane. Davis said he and other passengers were confused.

"I thought nothing of it other than this particular employee was incredibly rude and blatantly wrong in his accusations of me hitting him," he said. "I did not see or interact with him further for the duration of the flight."

The former NFL MVP said when the flight landed, the pilot asked all passengers to remain seated. Then six FBI and law enforcement agents boarded the plane and placed him in handcuffs.

"I was then removed from the flight while being recorded by multiple passengers as I was paraded off of the plane in handcuffs by the officers," Davis said. "I was − and remain − humiliated, embarrassed, powerless and angry."

Officials confirm Terrell Davis incident

Davis said he was taken by authorities for questioning, and alleged afterward "it was rightfully determined by the agents this flight attendant was inaccurate in his accusations and the agents profusely apologized even offering to support me and my family in any way possible."

Spokespersons for the FBI and John Wayne Airport in Santa Ana, where the flight landed, confirmed the incident to USA TODAY Sports.

"FBI agents and law enforcement partners at Orange County's John Wayne Airport responded to a report regarding an incident that had occurred aboard a flight which required further investigation. One individual was detained for questioning, was cooperative with law enforcement and was released to continue his travels," both spokespersons said in a statement.

Davis added he hasn't heard anything from United Airlines but he refuses to be silent about "this disgusting display of injustice and deplorable treatment by United Airlines."

"The traumatizing experience of my two sons, my daughter, and my wife watching me being placed in handcuffs − without due process or any explanation − cannot be undone," Davis said.

United Airlines apologizes for incident

United Airlines apologized for the incident in a statement to USA TODAY Sports. The flight attendant involved in the matter has been removed from duty as it reviews the incident.

"This is clearly not the kind of travel experience we strive to provide, and we have reached out to Mr. Davis’s team to apologize," United Airlines said.

His legal team at Stinar, Gould, Grieco & Hensley will be in contact with United Airlines, he added, demanding an investigation into the flight attendant. Parker Stinar of the law firm said in a statement to USA TODAY Sports that the legal team plans to investigate the incident and are contacting United Airlines about it.

"Mr. Davis' statement speaks for itself, and we can all agree no person should be subjected to this kind of injustice and humiliation, especially in front of their children and wife," Stinar said.

Davis played seven seasons for the Denver Broncos from 1995-2001. He was a star in Denver, winning the NFL MVP in 1998 and NFL Offensive Player of the Year in 1996 and 1998. He was part of the Super Bowl 32 and 33 winning teams, and he was named Super Bowl MVP in Super Bowl 32. He's the all-time leading rusher in Broncos franchise history and was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2017.

The state of Louisiana has reportedly dropped the gambling and fraud charges against New England Patriots wide receiver Kayshon Boutte. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported the news through Boutte’s attorney Tuesday morning.

Boutte was arrested back in January for charges stemming from his time in college at LSU. He was accused of creating a fake sports gaming account online and representing himself to be 21 years or older, despite being underaged for gambling.

It led to him allegedly placing more than 8,900 illegal bets with more than $500,000 in payouts.

This latest report is obviously good news for Boutte, who can now put the charges behind him and focus on the business of football. Training camp is right around the corner, and he already faces an uphill battle to make a Patriots roster that has upgraded at the receiver position.

The team spent a second and fourth-round draft pick on rookies Ja’Lynn Polk and Javon Baker in the 2024 NFL draft. They also signed veteran K.J. Osborn in free agency.

With Kendrick Bourne also set to return and DeMario Douglas emerging as one of the top receiving threats, Boutte could be an odd man out this summer. Granted, he did pick up some steam in the minicamp practices on multiple connections with rookie quarterback Drake Maye.

He’ll have to build on that to ensure a spot on the Patriots’ 53-man roster.

Pro Football Hall of Famer Lawrence Taylor was arrested on Wednesday on a felony charge for failing to report his residence change as a registered sex offender, according to The Athletic.

Taylor, 65, turned himself into the Broward Sheriff's Office in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on Wednesday and he was released on bail on Thursday, per the report.

The incident is nearly identical to a situation in 2021, when Taylor was arrested for the same thing in South Florida. Taylor avoided jail time then after he pleaded guilty to a lesser charge.

Taylor’s attorney called his arrest a “misunderstanding” on Thursday, and said he would be pleading not guilty.

“As with the previous incident involving the same allegations, Mr. Taylor did not knowingly commit any criminal offense. This situation is a significant misunderstanding,” his attorney, Mark Eiglarsh, said in a statement, via The Athletic. “We are confident that, once the prosecutors review the exculpatory evidence demonstrating Mr. Taylor’s innocence, he will once again achieve a favorable outcome.”
Taylor pleaded guilty to one count of sexual misconduct and one count of soliciting a prostitute in the third degree in New York in 2011, which is what required him to register as a sex offender in the first place. A 16-year-old girl said she was beaten and forced to go to Taylor’s hotel room to have sex with him. Taylor said at the time he was unaware that the girl was underage, and that he thought she was 19.

Taylor was given Level 1 sex offender status at his sentencing hearing, which is the lowest possible level. As he was considered low risk, his photo did not appear in an online sex offender database. Taylor was also sentenced to six years of probation in Florida. As a registered sex offender, Taylor is required to report any address changes to local authorities.

Taylor spent 13 seasons in the league with the New York Giants before he retired after the 1993 campaign. He won two Super Bowls with the organization, was a 10-time Pro Bowler and eight-time All-Pro linebacker, and he was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1999.
