When is the race?

While there’s no Triple Crown in play this year, there’s still plenty of intrigue surrounding the 2024 Belmont Stakes.
For starters, Saturday’s race will be run at historic Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., a couple of hours upstate from Belmont Park, where construction of a new grandstand is expected to take several years. Consequently, the so-called Test of the Champion will be shortened from its traditional 1 ½-mile distance to 1 ¼-mile due to the track configuration.
And with the purse upped to $2 million, a strong field is expected, including the first and second place finishers in the Kentucky Derby and there of the top four from the Preakness.
Coverage of Belmont Stakes Day begins on FS1 from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., with FOX picking up the coverage until 7 p.m., before it returns to FS2 until 8:10 p.m.
Here are the contenders expected to run in 2024 Belmont Stakes. The post position draw is scheduled for Monday at 5 p.m., so check back later for complete coverage, including post positions and the morning line odds:

MYSTIC DAN

Trainer: Ken McPeek
Jockey: Brian Hernandez Jr.
Owner: Lance Gasaway, 4 G Racing & Daniel Hemby.
Goes back to the 1 ¼-mile Kentucky Derby distance, winning the Run for the Roses with a perfect ground-saving trip and a 100 Beyer Speed Figure. At the 1 3/16-mile Preakness distance, Mystik Dan was unable to run down pace-setter Seize the Grey, and now looks to turn in a third big effort in five weeks, with Seize the Gey and Derby runner-up Sierra Leone in the field.

SEIZE THE GREY

Trainer: D. Wayne Lukas
Jockey: Jamie Torres
Owner: MyRaceHorse
The Preakness winner is a contender that’s shown incredible improvement, going wire-to-wire in the Preakness to win by two lengths and picked up a 100 Beyer Speed Figure. That performance came after the colt picked up a first stakes win in the Grade 2 Pat Day Mile on Derby Day, the first graded stakes win of Torres' career, after running seventh in the Grade 1 Blue Grass Stakes

SIERRA LEONE

Trainer: Chad Brown.
Jockey: Flavien Prat
Owner: Mrs. John Magnier & others.
Had a great run in the Kentucky Derby, rallying from 18th to finish second by a nose to Mystik Dan, part of a three-horse blanket finish with Forever Young, credited with a 100 Beyer Speed Figure. A $2.3-million yearling purchase, Sierra Leone came from way back to win the Grade 1 Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland on April 6, after winning the Grade 2 Risen Star at Fair Grounds.

Resilience

Trainer: Bill Mott.
Jockey: Junior Alvarado.
Owner: Pam & Martin Wygod.
Made a strong move in the Kentucky Derby, challenging Mystik Dan as they hit the mile mark, before finishing sixth. Had an impressive win in the Grade 2 Wood Memorial at Aqueduct on April 6, beating 106-1 Society Man by 2 ¼ lengths. Was beaten 3 ½ lengths by Derby runner-up Sierra Leone in the Risen Star.

MINDFRAME

Trainer: Todd Pletcher
Jockey: Irad Ortiz Jr.
Owners: Repole Stable and St. Elias Stables
Unbeaten in two career starts, including a maiden victory at Gulfstream Park on March 30 that earned a 103 Beyer Speed Figure, the best number in the field. But that was at seven furlongs, coming back to win a Churchill Downs allowance race in style, ridden out in a 7 ½-length win a 1 1/16-mile test.

THE WINE STEWARD

Trainer: Mike Maker
Jockey: TBA
Owners: Paradise Farms, David Staudacher
Had the lead in the stretch in the Grade 3 Peter Pan at Aqueduct, but was unable to hold off Antiquairan, finishing second by ¾-length. It was the latest in a series of near misses that resulted in second place finishes after challenging late, including in the Grade 3 Lexington Stakes and the Grade 1 Breeders’ Futurity, both at Keeneland

DORNOCH

Trainer: Danny Gargan
Jockey: Luis Saez
Owner: West Paces Racing & others.
Had traffic trouble in the Kentucky Derby, getting checked hard with a quarter-mile to go while trying to make a move and ended up 10th at 22-1. Has a win over Sierra Leone, by a nose in the Remsen at Aqueduct last year, and won the Grade 2 Fountain of Youth at Gulfstream Park, before placing fourth in the Grade 1 Blue Grass Stakes.

TUSCAN GOLD

Trainer: Chad Brown
Jockey: Tyler Gaffalione
Owner: William Lawrence, Walmac Farm and Stonestreet Stables.
A lighty-raced longshot comes off a sixth-place finish in the Preakness in which the Medaglia D’Oro colt got off to a slow start and never challenged. With just four career starts, Tuscan Gold was beaten less than two lengths by Catching Freedom in the Grade 2 Louisiana Derby, and likes to make a run from off the pace, with the extra distance helping here.

HONOR MARIE

Trainer: Whit Beckman
Jockey: Ben Curtis
Owner: Ribble Farms
Was last in the Kentucky Derby after six furlongs, before rallying for a respectable eighth-place finish at 14-1. Ran second behind Catching Freedom in the Grade 2 Louisiana Derby at Fair Grounds on March 23, having won the Grade 2 Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes at Churchill Downs four months earlier.

PROTECTIVE

Trainer: Todd Pletcher
Jockey: TBA
Owner: Repole Stable
Pletcher is a four-time Belmont Stakes winner, with the last coming with Mo Donegal in 2022. Now he sends out a talented maiden that has yet to fulfill his potential, coming off a third-place finish in the Grade 3 Peter Pan at Aqueduct, finish two lengths behind stablemate Antiquarian. Ran third in the Grade 2 Wood Memorial before that.

ANTIQUARIAN

Trainer: Todd Pletcher
Jockey: John Velazquez
Owner: Centennial Farms
Takes a big step up in class in the fifth start of the Preservationist colt’s career, running down the Wine Steward to win the Grade 3 Peter Pan at Aqueduct last time out. Finished sixth in the Grade 2 Blue Grass Stakes two races back, the only test so far against top-level competition.

2024 Belmont Stakes Ultimate Betting Guide: Odds, Post Positions 1

What Horses Are Favored In The 2023 Belmont Stakes?

Given its revised distance at 1¼ miles, the Belmont Stakes is shaping up to be a sequel to the Kentucky Derby. Many of the Derby notables are in this field. Sierra Leone surged from 18th to miss out on the win roses by a nose to Mystik Dan in a three-way photo.
Sierra Leone should attract a lot of action this week as his Derby run left a bit too much on the table. He's the early-line favorite.
Another Derby entrant running Saturday is Dornoch. He finished a distant 10th in the Derby, but he beat Sierra Leone by a nose at Aqueduct last year.
Trainer Todd Pletcher has four Belmont victories on his resume. He has three horses in this field: Antiquarian, Protective, and Mindframe. His third hose, Mindframe, is 2-0 and has the best Beyer Speed Figure (103) in this field. And he’s won at 1 11/16th miles. So he can carry this distance.
Mystik Dan is the first Derby winner to run in the Belmont after losing the Preakness since 2013.

How Long Is The 2024 Belmont Stakes?

Traditionally, the Belmont Stakes is 1½ miles (or 12 furlongs). It’s run on a dirt track and the horses run counterclockwise. With the move to Saratoga Race Course this year and next year, the Belmont Stakes will be 1¼ miles (or 10 furlongs). That is the same distance as the Kentucky Derby.

How Much Is The Purse In The 2024 Belmont Stakes?

$2 million.

What Horse Won Belmont Stakes In 2023?

Arcangelo went off at 7-1 and pulled away down the stretch on the inside to win the 2023 Belmont by 2½ lengths over Forte and Tapit Trice. Jena Antonucci made history as the first female trainer to win a Triple Crown race.

What Are The Biggest Mistakes People Make When Betting On Horse Racing?

FanDuel TV host Todd Schrupp offered the following perspective before the Kentucky Derby: “Exotically speaking, meaning wagers outside of Win, Place & Show, there are more wagering options than ever before. There are at least a dozen pools for different wagers tied into (any race). Narrow your focus on which ones you want to play. The Skill Set for playing 'Horizontally' into the (race), i.e.; Double, Pick Three, Pick Five, or a Pick Six, is vastly different than trying to hit 'Vertically'. Exotic Vertical options are Exacta, Trifecta, Superfecta, and Super Hi-5. Be a Horizontal or Vertical player . . . not both."

What Is The No. 1 Piece Of Advice For Bettors?

"Avoid the temptation to be 'the smartest person in the room’,” Schrupp said. “We'd all like to be the only person to pick the (race) winner, and upsets do happen; but there is nothing wrong with consistently identifying solid 9-1 shots that can win versus the rarity of a 50-1 shot. Also, your first instinct about who can win . . . is usually the best one. Don't be swayed by the deluge of information. There's nothing worse than being moved off a horse you always liked, because of someone else's opinion. Trust yourself, you got this."

Are There Any Major Misconceptions About Horse Racing Betting?

It’s not rocket science. But it does take work. “THE biggest misconception about betting on horses is that it's completely random,” Schrupp said. “There is a sophistication and cerebral component to handicapping a horse's past performances and trying to find a winner. Over time makes you realize it's more than just 'horses running in a circle'. Couple that with the challenge of which pool to bet into and constructing your play; and you have not just the greatest challenge in the gambling world, you have the most rewarding."

The Kentucky Derby Is About The Roses. What About The Belmont?

The Belmont is known – by a few – as “The Run For The Carnations.” Those flowers signify luck and love. Thus, it is the flower of choice at the Belmont. About 700 carnations are used to make the 40-pound blanket that is draped over the winner.

What Horse Is The Fastest Belmont Stakes Winner Of All Time?

The great Secretariat won the 1973 Belmont in a time of 2:24. That is the record for the race at its current length. Big Red’s performance that day delivered the most memorable moment in the history of thoroughbred racing. He would win the final race in his Triple Crown by 31 lengths.
What Are The Other Races In The Triple Crown?
The other two races in the Triple Crown at the Kentucky Derby – run at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky – and the Preakness Stakes – run at Pimlico in Baltimore. The Preakness is the shortest of the Triple Crown races at 1 3/16 miles (9.5 furlongs). The Belmont is traditionally the longest at 1½ miles (12 furlongs). The Derby is 1¼ miles

What Horses Have Won The Triple Crown?

The Triple Crown is bestowed upon the winners of the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes, and Belmont Stakes. Since the three races began being run in the same year in 1875, 13 horses have won them all. None was better than Secretariat. Here’s the list:
