I'd have to go with Hagler. I see Duran isn't in the mix.

Hearns & especially Leonard shouldn't be in the mix either. Robinson was pound-for-pound one of the best fighters of all time, and my dad was a big fan of him because he never ducked anybody, but Robinson was a better welterweight than middleweight, though he obviously was a damn fine middleweight too... My final 3 would be, in alphabetical order: Hagler, Hopkins & Jones.

I remember all those fights, and might even have seen at least a couple of them on free TV; in those years all 3 networks showed live, championship-level boxing at least once a month each as part of their weekend sports programming (Wide World of Sports, CBS Sports Spectacular etc), especially in February - April after football season ended and before the spring playoffs heated-up... Don't know if he still does, but during his career Shavers held the record for lifetime knock-out %, at least in the heavyweight division... RIP.

Very sad. Still too young; I hope he had a peaceful passing among his family.

I sure as shit wanted him to tear that loud-mouthed moslem scum to pieces.

I saw this fight live on CCTV from the Quarterdeck Club on Magsaysay Drive in Olongapo City PI, and on the USMC's 208th Birthday to boot! The Quarterdeck was what we called a Lifer bar so I generally avoided it, except on the two occasions when I was there for the USMC's 205th & 208th birthdays: there was a nice spread, cake, booze vouchers, so for a few hours we put-up with the lame music & whiff of middle management; and on this day the place was hopping early because the main event started at 10-11am, same time as when I saw the Holmes - Ali fight from Peso Jimmy's a block around the corner 3 years earlier... We finished our 12-on-24-off shift at 0730, went straight to our quonset hut at Mau Camp to shave, shower, brush teeth & change into civvies, then waited outside for the Magic Bus that went to the main gate... Hagler won a close but unanimous decision, though I didn't think the fight was even that close anyway... Duran used a strategy that Leonard would follow 3-1/2 years later: Stay outside, stay busy but never hurt Hagler, and steal rounds... Almost worked too, based on the judges' scoring after 12 rounds...
