Coach Mayo

If Mayo can inspire the team as a whole, and we get a top-flight haul from the draft (offense, that is) ... Sure, I think he can succeed. Is he good enough to overcome weak offensive talent? Who knows. Bill wasn't, so I would lean towards Mayo not being able to do it as well.

I think his leadership ability is top notch, but im a bit skeptical of his experience level

At least he was a player, and not just a player but a Defensive Rookie of the Year, All-Pro, Pro Bowler, SB Champion and Team Captain

I'm going to hold off on judging the hire until I see what the staff ends up looking like. I don't trust him to be experienced enough to run a short-staffed operation filled with a pair of brand new, young coordinators and not enough lower assistants, for example.

I don’t know what to make of him. He’s younger and will probably have an easier time relating to the youth on the team than Bill did. But it’s confusing trying to figure out if he didn’t earn the DC job, or if he did and Bill just gave it to his son (because nepotism) before stripping Stevie of that job by the time Week 18 rolled around.

I’d have rather the team completely moved away from BB’s influence, but I will be happy to be wrong.

I'm still interested to hear if Mayo was Curran's source, undermining Bill and the team for the last 18 months. If so, I wish nothing but failure for him.

So far I haven't seen reporting on this (not that it wasn't reported on, I've just missed it if so). I do hear about his connection with Curran because of the TV show they did together.

Also hearing people make logical arguments as to why Mayo was the leak. Hearing reports that BB's and Mayo's relationship was deteriorating since last year too - although that could be for any number for reasons.

I like Mayo and think he can be a good coach but I question the way the Krafts handled pretty much everything with this. No GM so it seems like Groh and Wolf are making the choices, how much input does Mayo have? Who has the final say on draft picks and FA's? The team reportedly offered Steve and Brian jobs, add in Mayo and like Kontra said.. this is still the same coaching tree. I don't like the idea that he was promised the HC a year ago. I would've like to see them at least interview a couple of outside candidates. But what's done is done, maybe there will be some clarity in the coming weeks as to who's building the roster for this season.

I'm actually happy to hear Steve and Brian were offered jobs but your point makes sense.

We're not looking at radical change here. Despite a seemingly radical departure from the norm that was required to fire a hall of fame coach.

It’s possible Mayo was going after Bill’s job through the press but the team was 4-13 so I don’t know how necessary it would have been. It’s not like the team lost a close playoff game and internal backstabbing caused this coaching change. I can’t think of any teams that have retained a coach after a season like that, a few years into a reset.

Which makes Mayo's actions (if they were his actions) even more nonsensical and demonstrable poor judgment.

If the recent problems have been about BB overruling the underlings (and I'm not saying it is, but I'm saying "if"), keeping things in place would make some sense.
