Food and Recipe's

In honor of tonight's supper (meatloaf), I'm going to ask for y'all to offer up items you put in a meatloaf that you think others might not.

We use bacon, for example, and not everyone does that. We also say "no thanks" to the use of ketchup, and go with tomato sauce instead.
i don't eat beef (migraines) so i use ground turkey. i usually sub ground chicken for ground beef but the turkey tastes better with "meatloaf". and i do not use ketchup. i use mayo. but it's been awhile since i've made it so i'd have to go look at my "recipe". 😄

On Tuesday, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that it will ban brominated vegetable oil (BVO), a food additive.

The ban will take effect on Aug. 2, 2024.

BVO is a vegetable oil modified with bromine, a toxic gas.
In the late 1960s, the FDA authorized using BVO in small amounts (not exceeding 15 parts per million) in citrus-flavored sodas to keep the flavoring from floating to the top. Manufacturers also use it in other products.
“The agency concluded that the intended use of BVO in food is no longer considered safe after the results of studies conducted in collaboration with the National Institutes of Health (NIH) found the potential for adverse health effects in humans,” the FDA wrote in its statement...

I don't do TikTok but, if you do, there's a recipe in this piece, and I did enjoy the rest of the read (and I agreed with him in the food ratings, which was surprising to me):

When you think of the folks who come up with McDonald’s menu items, the word “chef” might not immediately come to mind.

But it turns out, there’s a guy out there named Mike Haracz, who once was a corporate chef for the Golden Arches.

His TikTok page is largely devoted to talking about his former gig as corporate chef for McDonald’s....

BAKED SWEET AND SOUR CHICKEN
😍

Ingredients:
4 boneless skinless chicken breasts, cut into 1″ pieces
1 cup corn starch
2 large eggs
1/4 cup vegetable oil
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/4 cup ketchup
1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
2 tbsp. soy sauce
1 tsp. garlic powder
1/2 tsp. sea salt
Instructions:
Preheat your oven to 325°F (163°C) and line a 13 x 9-inch baking pan with parchment paper. Set it aside.
Season the chicken breast pieces with salt and pepper.
Add the cornstarch to a large Ziploc bag and add the chicken breast pieces. Seal the bag and shake it to coat the chicken evenly with cornstarch.
In a shallow bowl, beat the two large eggs.
Heat the vegetable oil in a skillet over medium-high heat until it’s sizzling.
Dip each cornstarch-coated chicken piece into the beaten eggs, ensuring they are well coated.
Sear the coated chicken pieces in the skillet until they turn golden brown. Then, transfer them to the prepared baking pan.
In a medium-sized bowl, combine the granulated sugar, ketchup, apple cider vinegar, soy sauce, garlic powder, and sea salt. Whisk these ingredients together until well mixed.
Pour the sweet and sour sauce over the chicken pieces in the baking pan.
Bake the chicken in the preheated oven for about 1 hour, making sure to toss the chicken halfway through to ensure even coating and cooking.
Once the chicken is fully cooked and the sauce has thickened, remove it from the oven.
Serve the Baked Sweet and Sour Chicken with rice or your preferred side dish.
Enjoy your homemade sweet and sour chicken
