Popular breakfast cereals are absolutely disgusting. No idea why anyone would eat this garbage over some of the most tasty and healthy breakfast choices like bacon and eggs, omelettes, fruit, cottage cheese etc.

Even when I used to eat an incredibly unhealthy diet, I still couldn’t stomach those sugary cereals and that’s saying a lot since I was a fast food / junk food / carb addict. If I wanted something tasty with no regard for nutrition, I’d take a bagel w/cream cheese or a breakfast sandwich, or hash browns any day over junk cereals. I can’t believe how popular they are.

It's rare for me - the sugar content is just way to high - but on occasion I crave Captain Crunch or Honey Smacks. I get those smaller single-serving cups. Nice to indulge, but a quality Bacon/Over Easy Egg/Cheese on toast is my favorite.

If you could just take one simple idea to help with weight loss, this is the one. If an average person simply substituted their beverages with zero calorie options, they’d lose a lot of weight. How much weight? Assuming there are no other adjustments and weight loss is the goal: 50 pounds per year. Yes, 50 mother fucking pounds.

But say you weren’t that extreme and just substituted diet soda for regular soda, flavored water for juice, limited milk/cream in coffee, and avoided stuff like milkshakes, and still consumed half those calories: still 25 lbs per year. Basically in one year you’d go from obese to the average range. And that’s assuming you make no additional calorie restricting changes to your food.

That’s crazy. I mean, all the alternatives are there and like 80% as good as the high calorie option (I prefer diet soda.) Whenever I see someone trying to lose weight but drinking calories I just think what a total waste of their calorie budget.

I kind of joke with people that I like to eat my calories rather than drink them but it's the truth. I mostly drink coffee with nothing in it and water.I don't drink a lot of alcohol. I can go months without having a drink and not even miss it. but alcohol is probably the only drink I have that has calories. And the only time I might possibly have any soda is if alcohol is in it.

I've been trying lately to be more mindful of the stuff that's in food. I'm a not100% healthy eater or even 80% but I have friends who are into homeopathy and eating more naturally and it's really made me think about the dyes and soy and all this other stuff that's in your food. My favorite electrolyte supplement is actually a little packet that I put in water and I think the total calories is 5. I've been trying not to do it too much because it has artificial color in it .

I'm far from perfect I'm just trying to cut out here and there and just be better . For years I've heard the adage about you should be able to pronounce everything that's in your food. the way I mostly avoid it is that I mainly eat fresh fruits and vegetables and rotisserie chicken meat for my protein. I extremely extremely rarely eat any frozen food other than ice cream. I tossed all that shit out of my freezer. As much as I love sugar cereals I can't even tell you the last time I had any. I'd much rather have a pancake with chocolate chips, hash browns, biscuits, chicken sausage, stuff like that if I have breakfast. If I do eat breakfast a lot of times I'll eat a brekki or fruit.

My biggest problem is I'm a sweet and a carboholic so luckily for me I live near amish country and I can go get bread that doesn't have preservatives and additives in it from them.

Took this pic today at the gym. I’ve got about 10-15 lbs of body fat left to lose, probably 4-6 months since I’m recomping. I don’t really care about really low body fat, six pack, etc, just don’t want to have a gut any more.

On July 9th, 2023 I weighed 267.8 lbs, diagnosed with pre type 2 diabetes and had virtually no muscle or strength. That was the first day I went to the gym. I avoided takIng pics cause I hated them so much but here’s a few:

Everyone has something addictive. Seems most people either like the sugary carbs like bread, cake, etc or the fatty carbs like burgers, fried foods. I’m in the latter category, but it’s still similar: foods high in calories, low in protein, high on glycemic index, give huge insulin spike.

I’ve been so into macros (carbs, protein, fat) that I’ve barely paid attention to the ingredients but am starting to take note of these things.

You've done amazing job at getting yourself in shape congrats. I too had my ass kicked into gear by having my eye Doctor of all people tell me that he thought I was pre diabetic just from my eye exam. lest you think that's hokey the reason I started going to him is because I had a friend who went to him and he told her after her eye exam The he thought she had MS and she got checked out and found out that she did. Sure enough I went and got tested for diabetes and my A1C was borderline both of my parents had adult-onset diabetes and I said oh hell no I am not going there.
I have a friend who just bought one of those devices that you breathe into in the morning and it tells you whether you should be eating more carbs, fats, or proteins and the ratios. and she talks about macros all the time. She's a senior citizen and relatively active she does Tai Chi and senior fit 2 times a week and she walks on her treadmill and when it's nice weather out we take walks in the park together so she has a decent level of activity. and she's not someone who stays at home and is a lump all the time either. We were talking about food and eating and everything cause we both love to eat and she said she's getting frustrated because she's not losing weight. and I said you know you really don't eat a lot. And I ask you what you've eaten I'm usually eating more than you are and you're an active person. I don't understand. and so that made her think about it and she decided to get this device . She is down 6 pounds and she just started using it on January 2nd. she never feels hungry anymore either and she's actually eating more food. She wants to lose only about 15 pounds total then she'll be at the weight she's happy at. I'd sincerely consider getting one of those just to help me balance my eating better. it sounds like you do that pretty damn well manually.

Studies have found that people generally eat about the same weight of food quantities regardless of calorie breakdown. So for example, if given two 4 oz steak options, one that’s fatty and filled with a sugary glaze will give you about the same satiety as lean cut with minimal sugar added. So the first option may be 500 calories; the second may be 300 calories. You feel equally full - in the moment - with either one, but the calorie breakdown is very different.

Many people can just intuitively eat and know about when they’ve had enough to maintain a healthy weight. Others, like myself, cannot. Love of food, ties to emotional overeating, hormonal issues, depression, stress, all of these probably play some factor here.

Basically if you’re not able to intuitively maintain your goal body fat level, or consistently move in the right direction, you have two options: improv eating along with hope (likely to continually fail, since that strategy has not worked) or planned eating while consciously tracking calorie intake.

I do “manually” but it’s because I track every calorie with a food scale, nutrition labels, etc. It all comes down to numbers in both cases.
