I get where he's going, but that second year is misleading. Boston had that #1 pick. They just traded down because of who the others were going to draft.

A protected pick means that the team giving up the pick doesn't give up the pick that year if the draft position is as high as the protection. In other words, if a pick is top 3 protected, the team giving up the pick doesn't have to do so if their position in the draft ends up being #1, #2, or #3.
