Detroit Lions coach Dan Campbell is expected to miss this weekend’s rookie minicamp in Allen Park due to a personal matter, a team source confirmed Friday. The Detroit Free Press first reported the news earlier Friday.
Detroit’s 2024 rookie class is in Allen Park this weekend for a minicamp, along with a host of undrafted free agents and tryout players. Veterans and rookies are expected back for team OTAs on May 21. Campbell, who is scheduled to speak before that workout, is expected back by then.
Detroit will have two more OTA periods in May before going through a mandatory minicamp during the first week of June. OTAs will wrap up June 10.
Campbell is entering his fourth season as the Lions head coach and in 2023 helped guide the team to one of its best years ever.
Detroit won its first playoff game since 1991, tied a franchise record with 12 regular season wins, clinched its first division title since 1993 and made the franchise’s second-ever appearance in the NFC Championship Game.
The Lions have spent much of this offseason attempting to retain the key pieces from the roster that contributed to that success, signing receiver
Amon-Ra St. Brown and
Penei Sewell to
contract extensions and working
on an extension for quarterback
Jared Goff.
The Lions used the 2024 NFL Draft to boost their defense, trading up in the first round to select cornerback
Terrion Arnold, as well as drafting cornerback
Ennis Rakestraw Jr. in the second round.
