Very sad. RIP
Former New England Patriots tight end Don Hasselbeck has passed away, according to his son.
Former NFL quarterback Matt Hasselbeck made the announcement on social media.
“It is with deep sorrow that we share the passing of our father, Don Hasselbeck, who suffered cardiac arrest and passed away today,” Matt wrote. “We want to thank our parents’ neighbors and all of the medical professionals who came to his aid. He was a great husband, father, grandfather, friend, coach, player, coworker, artist, mentor and storyteller.”
Don Hasselbeck was selected by the New England Patriots in the second round of the 1977 NFL draft.
He was in Foxborough the first six seasons of his nine-year career. He also spent time with the Los Angeles Raiders, Minnesota Vikings and New York Giants before retiring in 1985.
Hasselbeck won a Super Bowl with the Raiders in 1983. While in New England, Hasselbeck caught 98 passes for 1,437 yards and 15 touchdowns.
He grew up in Ohio, and settled in Massachusetts where his sons Matt, Tim and Nathanael became stars.
Matt and Tim went to Xaverian Brothers High School in Westwood while Nathanael attended Bridgton Academy in Maine.
All three played football at Boston College.
“Despite being an All-American at Colorado and a Super Bowl Champion with the Raiders, what we are most proud of is the leader he was for our family,” Matt wrote of his father, who was 70. “He helped set our feet on solid ground ... There is a 6′7″ hole in our hearts. He will be missed by so many."
