2023-24 Boston Celtics & NBA Thread

We had us a gen-u-ine NBA trade:

The Chicago Bulls are trading Alex Caruso to the Oklahoma City Thunder for Josh Giddey, according to Adrian Wojnarowski. Caruso, an All-Defense guard who has spent the past three seasons in Chicago after winning the 2020 championship with the Lakers, has been the subject of trade rumors for several years now. The Bulls have resisted offers built around draft picks throughout his entire time in Chicago.

But in Giddey, the Bulls land a former No. 6 overall pick who was in desperate need of a fresh start. Giddey has been a starter for Oklahoma City since he arrived, but his failure to develop as a 3-point shooter doomed him on a roster that already had Shai Gilgeous-Alexander at point guard. His role diminished throughout the postseason and he was benched in the final two games against the Dallas Mavericks...

..... and a coaching hire:

The Los Angeles Lakers are hiring JJ Redick as their next head coach, sources confirm to CBS Sports' Bill Reiter. Redick, a 15-year NBA veteran who played for the Orlando Magic, Milwaukee Bucks, Los Angeles Clippers, Philadelphia 76ers, New Orleans Pelicans and Dallas Mavericks, was most recently in a TV analyst role with ESPN. He has never coached at the professional nor amateur level.

While successful on the court, Redick's rise to prominence has largely come through the media as he hosted a podcast during his playing career. Since retiring, he has worked as a critically acclaimed broadcaster for ESPN. Now, Redick takes one of the highest-profile gigs in the coaching profession for his first job...

The Brooklyn Nets are trading star forward Mikal Bridges to the New York Knicks for a monster trade package, according to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski. The Knicks will send the Nets unprotected first-round picks in 2025, 2027, 2029 and 2031 along with a protected 2025 first-round pick from the Bucks, an unprotected 2028 first-round swap and a 2025 second-round pick, according to Wojnarowski. Bojan Bogdanovic will also be in the deal as matching salary.
As a secondary deal attached to this one, according to Wojnarowski, the Nets have also agreed to a trade with the Houston Rockets that will bring the Nets back their first-round pick in 2026 in exchange for a 2027 first-round swap originally belonging to the Phoenix Suns. The Rockets also acquired the right to swap whichever first-round pick they have in 2025, which would either be their own or Oklahoma City's, with Phoenix's, which had belonged to the Nets. In exchange for that, Houston relinquished its right to swap that pick with Brooklyn's in 2025, allowing the Nets to retain control over their picks for the next two years. According to Wojnarowski, the Rockets are attempting to use those Suns picks to trade for Kevin Durant, though Phoenix has thus far resisted...

The Knicks were a completely different team with Anunoby. Not sure they’ll even better overall in going from Anunoby to Bridges. Bridges is a good player but not a franchise altering guy. That’s an insane haul given this tradeoff.

Apparently, they want both guys. They're going all in, probably trying to get things done before the new CBA, and its rules, make it much more difficult.

And I can't be the only person who finds it funny that the owners are already looking for ways to manipulate the CBA that they wanted pushed in order to rein in their own spending.

On paper, that would be a very good team.

The New York Knicks are re-signing OG Anunoby to a five-year, $212.5 million contract, according to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski. The deal will include a player option and a trade kicker, but comes in below what his overall max figure would have been. The Knicks acquired Anunoby in a mid-season trade with the Toronto Raptors, and New York proceeded to go 20-3 with him in the lineup during the regular season...

This is a big loss for Denver. Great player. Let’s hope he doesn’t go to another contender.
