Jacoby Brissett is the starting quarterback for the New England Patriots, but coach Jerod Mayo didn’t completely slam the door on the possibility of rookie Drake Maye winning the starting job.

“If he comes out here and lights it up … it could absolutely happen,” Maye said when addressing media members on Tuesday, via the Boston Herald’s Andrew Callahan.

The Patriots have expressed patience throughout the offseason when it comes to their developmental plan with Maye. They didn’t use the No. 3 overall pick of the 2024 NFL draft on him just to see the situation implode like it did under the previous regime with Mac Jones.

There are still questions along the offensive front for the team as a whole, particularly at the left tackle position. The team isn’t quite where they want to be at the skilled positions, either.

They could use Brissett as the veteran bridge option at quarterback, while slowly developing Maye behind the scenes to take the reins at some point. The Patriots have one of the hardest schedules in the NFL, and they aren’t close to playoff contention.

There’s no rush to put Maye on the field until he’s ready.

I don't care if Maye looks like year 10 Brady during training camp/exhibition season. They need to staple his ass to the bench to start the season.

Absolutely can't run him out there until you know you can protect him.

Patriots players and fans got a small glimpse last season of just how good Christian Gonzalez can be.

The then-rookie and 2023 first-round pick looked like a shutdown cornerback for four games last season when he matched up with receivers such as A.J. Brown, Tyreek Hill, Garrett Wilson, and CeeDee Lamb.

Gonzalez’s promising start was cut short in Week 4 due to a season-ending shoulder injury.

Now healthy, Gonzalez has a chance to make a major impact on the Patriots defense. His work on the field has been so impressive that even his veteran teammates are looking forward to seeing the defensive back come training camp. That includes veteran Jonathan Jones, who paid Gonzalez the ultimate compliment when he compared him to former ‘Defensive Player of the Year,’ Stephon Gilmore.

“(I’ve seen) much of the same since he’s been here last year. He comes in, doesn’t say much,” Jones said on Tuesday. “He kind of reminds me of Gilmore in the sense that he doesn’t really say much, but when they step out on the field, they become playmakers. It’s exciting to see him back, coming off an injury, I think it’s going to be good for him.”

Gonzalez started the first four games of his career, finishing with 17 tackles, three passes defended, and an interception. At 6-foot-2, 205 pounds, he has the ideal size for an outside cornerback, but what made him special was his athleticism.
Gonzalez also ran a 4.38 40-yard dash at the 2023 NFL Combine. That speed was on display when he covered one of the fastest players in the NFL in Hill last season. When Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa targeted Gonzalez with Hill in coverage, the quarterback was just 1-of-4 for six yards.
Jones said he thinks Gonzalez will shine during training camp, which starts on Wednesday when the pads come on.
“(He’s) just coming out and working,” Jones said. “Once we get out in pads, that’s when he shows - especially for a guy like him, a physical corner and puts his hands on guys. Once we get out in pads, I think he’ll show.”
