The Figure-4 leg-lock, as executed by the Original Nature Boy, Buddy Rogers.
Muchnick didn't like managers?!?
For a geezer whose own territory was relatively small (Saint Louis), he had a big say in the industry overall. Maybe too big...
Yup. The NWA title really centered around St Louis back in the day. It was the place wrestlers would come from other territories to get a short run with the US title as a proving ground to see who could be groomed for the world title.
Until Crockett monopolized the NWA and Flair.
And 8-time NWA World champion Harley Race was based in Saint Louis, a mere coincidence I'm sure...
Harley Race was majority owner of St Louis territory in the early to mid 80's.
When McMahon began his national expansion and began to run shows outside of his northeast territory, several NWA members discussed the possibility of having Vince.killed! This is not conjecture. Several members have confirmed that it was indeed discussed. They obviously decided not to go there.
However, when WWF went to St Louis for the first time in 1984 or 85 (can't remember which), Harley Race showed up at the show. He waited for Hulk Hogan to go into the bathroom. Race followed him in a few minutes later when Hogan was on the shitter. Race kicked open the door and pulled a gun on Hogan. He told him he should kill him right there for running St Louis. Hogan has later said he was thankful he was on the toilet where he could shit freely rather than in his pants. Harley Race was someone who WOULD shoot a person over his territory.
Seems Race saw the writing on the wall and may have been using the moment to secure a nice end of career WWF run in 1986-87. Vince wanted to make Harley happy given the scary feelings amongst NWA royalty.
There are more stories like this. Old school wrestling was no joke.
