Jim Brown: The Syracuse Basketball Star You Never Knew About
The NFL Hall of Famer and college football legend also played hoop for the Orangemen from 1954-1956. At 6’2 and 212 pounds, Brown was described as a ferocious rebounder and, to no one’s surprise, the best athlete on the court at all times. He averaged 13.1 points per game in his two years with the team.

Brown chose not return to the team for his senior season in ‘57 because he was not permitted to be a starter. Unfortunately, Syracuse was operating under an unwritten rule stating that the team was only allowed to start three black players at one time.
Many Syracuse faithful speculate Brown would have been the missing piece to the school’s first national championship that year. Instead, the school had to wait until 2003 to win that elusive title.

Brown also played lacrosse at Cuse, where he was named an All-American and established himself as one of the greatest collegiate players of all time. He also dabbled in track-and-field when his schedule permitted it, once placing 5th in the decathlon at a National Championship meet.

Amazingly, basketball appeared to be Jim Brown’s “worst” sport in college.
