LOOKING BACK AT THE 2014 NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS ...
THE ROAD TO THEIR 4TH SUPER BOWL TROPHY ... 10 YEARS AGO
ON THIS DATE (January 18, 2015) ... AFC Championship Game at Foxboro
New England Patriots vs Indianapolis Colts
The Patriots faced the underdog Colts for the fourth time in just three seasons and the second time in the playoffs, looking to claim their sixth AFC Championship crown in a downpour at Gillette Stadium. But this game became more famous for the “Deflategate” scandal.
When the Patriots punted on their first drive, the Colts muffed the punt and Darius Fleming recovered it at the Colts-26. Six plays later, LaGarrette Blount scored to put the Patriots up, 7-0.
The Colts drove then to the Patriots 34, but Adam Vinatieri, now on the Colts, missed wide-right on his 52-yard attempt. With great field position, aided by a 30-yard catch by Shane Vereen, the Patriots took a 14-0 lead when Tom Brady hit James Develin for touchdown late in the first quarter.
Following a Colts punt, Brady was intercepted at the 1-yard and the Colts scored a touchdown, trimming their deficit to 14-7. The Patriots countered and were forced to settle for a field goal by Stephen Gostkowski, giving the Patriots 17-7 lead at the half.
Though it was a fairly even ballgame after the first half, the Patriots blew the top off the game in the second half. After receiving the kickoff, they went 87 yards, with Brady hitting Nate Solder, in as an eligible receiver, for a touchdown increasing their lead to 24-7. It was Solder's first career reception and touchdown.
The Pats defense continued to shut down Andrew Luck, while Brady and the offense continued to roll. After a Colts three-and-out, Brady hit Gronk for a touchdown to run the lead up to 31-7.
The Colts next drive last only four plays with Darrelle Revis intercepting Luck. On the very next play, Blount took it into the end zone, his 2nd touchdown of the night, cementing the fate of the game at 38-7.
Julian Edelman returned the next Colts punt to the Colts 45 and six minutes later, Blount burrowed through for his third touchdown of the night. On the next drive, Jamie Collins intercepted Luck and the Colts then ran out of time.
Tom Brady, extending his NFL record of playoff starts to 28, finished 23-of-35 for 226 yards, three touchdowns and an interception. This was his 7th career playoff game with three touchdowns, second only to Joe Montana's nine.
LaGarrette Blount was the star of the game, carrying the ball 30 times for a Patriots postseason record of 148 yard and three touchdowns.
