Patriots news

Patriots linebacker Matthew Judon has had quite an offseason for himself as he heads into the final year of his contract in New England.

The former Pro Bowler, while recovering from season-ending surgery following a tear of his right biceps on October 1st, is not only gearing up to be a leader of 2024 defense under new head coach Jerod Mayo, but is also in the process of opening up his own restaurant.

‘9Nine Kitchen & Lounge’, a downtown Dallas, Texas eatery specializing in southern cuisine, is set to open its doors this April. I spoke with Judon about his new business venture, where he sees it heading, and more ahead of the 2024 season:

“I think it was a very good spot to open up a restaurant.” Judon told WEEI.com on why he decided to branch off into the restaurant business. “I kind of seen a little void in the space that we’re opening up [in]. So it’s in downtown Dallas, right in Victory Park, and it’s probably like, I wanna say a five-minute walk from American Airlines Arena. Right by the House of Blues. So it’s in a very good spot.”

He continued: “I think why we did it – we just seen a void in the community and just wanted to get kind of, you know, service the community in that aspect.”

The Dallas location isn’t the only restaurant Judon plans to open. The 31-year-old is looking to expand his brand across the entire country, with eyes on his home state of Michigan, Boston, Arizona, and beyond.

“I’d like to grow the business and grow from here and kind of put it in a couple different states and different communities,” Judon explained. “I’mma try to get it to Boston and I’mma try to get one in Michigan, Arizona, a couple different spots.”

“It’s a good venture. It’s a good space… Come try to check it out.”

As mentioned above, Judon entered the offseason rehabbing from in-season surgery. Confirming what he told Good Morning Football last month, the linebacker says he’s ready to go:

“I’ve been healthy and I’ve been ready,” he explained of his health. “So it’s just whenever that time comes, I’mma be ready.”

While it was reported by ESPN’s Mike Reiss that talks have begun between Judon’s camp and the Patriots to one again restructure his contract, it doesn’t sound like said talks (or any pause in talks) will stop him from playing. He did say, however, that he’d like to retire in New England if possible.

“I think with the contract stuff, if it happens it happens…” he said. “If we can get a new contract worked out to where I try to end my career in Boston, that’d be great.”

Judon also told WEEI.com that the plan is for him to be in Foxborough for the start of New England’s offseason program, which begins next Monday, April 8.

Several of Judon’s teammates, including linebackers Josh Uche and Anfernee Jennings, resigned with the Patriots this offseason after testing the free agent market. He’s excited to team back up with them under new head coach Jerod Mayo.

“You know, I think our defense had a lot of good moments throughout the season,” Judon said. “And I think Mayo is going to be an amazing head coach for us, help us out, and try to right the ship.”

“It’s new. Everything’s new,” he continued. “But I’m glad we’ve got a lot of old faces coming. Uche and Ant [Anfernee Jennings], they came out for the opening [of the restaurant], and those guys are like my brothers so I’m very happy that they’re coming back.”
