Pats fans: We need WR's
Pats draft 2
Pats fans: No, not those ones
Alright, i gotta get some shit down around the house. I'll leave you guys to shit on the Pats adding players at positions of need for a while. Enjoy you miserable fucks
The Patriots don't need WR3, WR4 or WR5. The Patriots need WR1 and WR2. WR prospects considered more likely to become WR2 or WR1 were in trade up range for the Patriots. Instead, the Patriots actually traded down for prospects considered less likely to become those WRs. The Patriots also have been talking about speed for the past few years, yet didn't go for the true speed in the WR class.
Or, to put it another way, we watched the Bills and Chiefs, both teams that are absolutely desperate for WRs, make sure that they were drafting their WRs ahead of the Patriots, and drafting more highly touted WR prospects, and those are 2 of the 3 teams Patriots fans are likely to be most focused on in the upcoming season (with the Jets being that 3rd team).
So, when you're looking at the division, the Jets and Dolphins have their WRs. The Bills, in need of WRs, stayed ahead of the Patriots and got the (at least theoretically) better prospect. And the current "it" team, the Chiefs, drafted up and took the fastest WR in the draft , to pair with the deep throwing Mahomes.
Pointing that out, and being dubious about the Patriots moves as a result, is not only reasonable, it's the more sensible take, particularly when we're looking at a front office that has no history of succeeding with taking WRs high (whether you want to say that it's been part of the recent Pats group, or is just unproven, the fact still stands). That doesn't mean that the two players the Patriots chose won't end up as WR1s or WR2s. It doesn't mean that they won't become the next "Best WR in the NFL!". But it does mean that you're looking at guys who need to develop into something closer than their absolute ceilings in order to achieve the same level as the better prospects, and that's not really what people want to see when they're also looking at having drafted a QB who needs a lot of work himself.
