Film, TV, Netflix, HBO, Etc. Thread

It looks excellent. I haven’t seen the original. Recommended before the series debuts?

I'm going to watch the original afterwards, but I've seen it many times over the years. It won awards at the time and set ratings records, but it's not a fast paced thing. Also, there's a lot of Japanese dialogue without subtitles (it was done on purpose, as the central pair are the foreigner and his interpreter), and it's from 1980, so I'm guessing that you'd be better off either watching it in installments or watching it after the new one, so you can just stop if you find it's not your thing.

But that's just me guessing about how you'd feel, and I may well be wrong on that.

@Ice_Ice_Brady I know they ran out of GRRM’s source material, but I’m not a big enough nerd to have researched when that happened. Seems to me it must have happened sometime around S7 upon rewatch. The editing in S6 started to become really bad. The Faith Militant dude who got his head ripped off by the Mountain holding both hands on the Mountain’s forearms BEFORE dropping his sword with one hand (should have been the other way around), Jon’s sword flopping around when he jumped on his horse to save Rickon, etc. The writing joined it in S7.

I would have focused S7 on Danaerys retaking the Iron Throne instead of wasting time at Dragonstone. Cersei dies, Jaime dies. In the North, they would have mined Dragonglass, prepped for the Great War, and focused on the politics of reuniting the North. Littlefinger still dies when his game of pitting the Starks against each other still fails. By the end of S7, Danaerys, now Queen of the Seven Kingdoms, meets the North and learns of the Night King, the Great War. Write your other characters (like the Hound) around that.

S8 is now a more natural end to the show. Instead of Dani losing her mind, she dies in the Great War. Jon, now that his true lineage is public knowledge, assumes the Iron Throne.
This is a good alternative to what we saw. Unfortunately there wasn’t time to create these kinds of organic storylines and in S7 they started writing it like a bad 2 hr movie with everything leading up to an epic battle, only to have said battle only last one episode. That’s where things really fell apart imo. There was nothing to do for the remainder of the season so they created the most idiotic and hollow plots imaginable to tie it all. Yeah the foresight should have started a few seasons before the final season but clearly it didn’t.

Sony really needs to give up on the Spiderverse and let it the MCU handle it. Morbius and Madame Web were abominations

It's not just the Spider-verse. It's every superhero venture except Spider-man. Sony needs to know what works beyond Spider-man.

Ghost Rider
Mobius
Madame Web
Venom

All failures at one level or another.

I thought Morbius was ok. not great but entertaining for however long it lasted. Venom and Ghost Rider sucked, but Madame Web was complete garbage. The Marvels was better than Madame Web and the Marvels really sucked.
Fortunately I'm going to what I hope is going to be a really good movie next week. I'm going to see Dune 2 which I'm really looking forward to. I enjoyed the first one and will re-watch it sometime before Dune 2.

Dune 2 was really good. Chalamet, Austin Butler, and Bardem carried the movie. The cinematography is mesmerizing throughout, like most of Villeneuve’s movies. The one part I didn’t like was Walken’s casting as the Emperor. It’s hard to get past a sarcastic New Yorker being the Emperor of the galaxy. Short of that, though, I thought it was very good. If you’re going to see it, I’d recommend seeing it in XD. You won’t regret it.

What is it with all of the whispering in shows and movies? 90% of the shows and movies I see nowadays, the actors talk to each other via whispers. Are actors just getting worse? Or is this just some new technique they use? It’s really annoying.

It is annoying. I just use cc/subtitles for everything now even though the drama of the lines suffer from it.

I use subtitles for everything nowadays. Even if it’s a movie where they don’t whisper act. Subtitles are a game changer.
