A consumer thread

Don't take it personal. I'm a little twisted.

This is a thread for discussing all matters concerning consumers. Things like new products that you've tried and want to share how it went, consumer recalls, questions about a product or service you're thinking about using, etc...

I'll start. I was looking for a new desk chair because my fat ass pretty much wore out the old one. My old chair was made of "Pleather' which is make believe leather and it chipped and made a mess of the floor around it. I wanted my new chair to be leather or a fabric so it wouldn't chip again.

I found exactly what I was looking for through the Walmart website. I ended up buying a Heavy Duty (400 lbs) leather chair. Here's the description:

BOSSIN Home Office Chair, Big and Tall Chair 8 Hours 400 LBS Heavy Duty Design, Ergonomic High Back Cushion Lumbar Back Support, Computer Desk Chair, Adjustable Executive Leather Chair With Arms..

The cost was $89.99 plus tax. I think I did pretty well for a leather chair. I got the chair, put it together and am currently using it. Very comfortable was pretty easy to assemble.

If you're looking for a desk chair you might want to consider this.

How's the lumbar support?

I spend a lot of time in the chair and so far so good. This is much better than my old chair, a lot more comfortable and I can sit in it for hours on end without discomfort.

I bought plug-in air fresheners.

My kids guinea pigs, and my dog, make my apartment gross smelling for obvious reasons. Usually I walk in the door and smell pet urine.

Bought three of them yesterday, went out today, came back, walked in the door and it smells like this place was recently deep cleaned and hot mopped. Zero pet odor.

I’m impressed with these.

We put the Gain ones in our bathroom, guest bath, the girls’ bathrooms, and near the diaper cans upstairs and down. Makes a huge difference.

I’m upgrading my hand tools to DeWalt. I have a buddy who works there who can get me all of their tools on an employee discount. I’ve replaced my drill, chain saw, reciprocating saw, and hedge trimmer so far.

DeWalt's a great brand. Good quality stuff.

Correct but I’m not a contractor. It’s easier for me to just charge, plug, and play.

How so? It takes less than 30 seconds to pour gas into your power tool. It takes hours to recharge a battery.

Not for me. Takes 6 seconds. I plug it in and give it a full charge the day before. Then, I spend another 3 seconds plugging it in the day of. If I ever had yard work that took me hours and drained the batteries, leaving the work unfinished, I’d get gas-powered stuff. It would be more efficient.

Ok, but you'll always need to remember to pre-charge the battery, which means that you can't just chain saw that fallen tree, but have to wait a day to get to it.

Whatever works for you, of course, but to say that I hate battery powered tools is a gross understatement. I've tried them a bunch times, and even bought some on more than one occasion (for the quieter run) and I've ended up hating every single one of them, no exceptions.

And I will now get off my anti-battery soapbox.

Oh, the chainsaw battery is always charged. Especially during storm season.

Febreze and AirWick are the two major plug-ins. The actual plugs/cases are called warmers, and the two brands are physically different, so you need to choose one and then all of the scent bottles need to be compatible with that brand.

Gain is a scent you can buy for the Febreze plug in.

Another example of why you buy hard copies of things, not ethereal shit or subscriptions:

Roku has finally axed the Redbox app from its platform. Redbox parent company Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in June and moved to Chapter 7 in July, signaling the liquidation of its assets. However, the app has remained available but not fully functional in various places, leaving customers wondering if they will still be able to access content they bought. This development, however, mostly squashes any remaining hope of salvaging those purchases.

Redbox is best known for its iconic red kiosks where people could rent movie and TV (and, until 2019, video game) discs. But in an effort to keep up with the digital age, Redbox launched a streaming service in December 2017. At the time, Redbox promised “many” of the same new releases available at its kiosks but also “a growing collection” of other movies and shows. The company claimed that its on-demand streaming service was competitive because it had “newest-release movies” that subscription streaming services didn’t have. The service offered streaming rentals as well as purchases.
But as Cord Cutters News pointed out this week, people can no longer open the app using the Roku version of the Redbox app. When they try to use the app, they reportedly see a message reading: "Redbox is currently not supporting this app. For questions about the service on your account, please contact Redbox” and recommends other streaming apps, like Apple TV+.

Roku's move suggests that Redbox customers will not be able to watch items they purchased. Barring an unlikely change—like someone swooping in to buy and resurrect Redbox—it's likely that other avenues for accessing the Redbox app will also go away soon...

Redbox app axed, dashing people’s hopes of keeping purchased content

This thread's going to come in handy:

Attorney General Ken Paxton has filed a lawsuit against General Motors for allegedly gathering customers’ private data and selling it to insurance companies.
General Motors—which owns and manufactures Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, and Cadillac—is accused of illegally collecting and selling the private driving data of over 1.5 million Texans without their knowledge...

...Under the guise of safety features, General Motors has allegedly been installing technology in cars since 2015 that records specific information about each drive. According to the lawsuit, General Motors sold this data to purchasing companies that built a “telematics exchange” to store the data.

Based on certain risk factors predetermined by General Motors, purchasing companies would use the data they collected to calculate a “Driving Score.” A few negative risk factors used to formulate a driver’s score include late-night driving, seat belt status of both the driver and passenger, degree angle of turns made in the car, hard braking, floored acceleration, and even piloting the vehicle more than 80 miles per hour.
Agreements General Motors had with data purchasing companies also required them to allow insurance companies to access the driving scores.

The lawsuit posits that insurance companies subsequently used these scores and information from the “telematics exchanges” to either jack up customers’ insurance costs, drop coverage entirely, or deny coverage of would-be customers. As a result, General Motors accumulated large sums of money from these practices...
